Abstract
:
Introduction and objectives: Osteoporosis “OP” is classified as one of the most serious health concerns globally. OP increases the skeletal fractures risk by 35%, particularly at the hip, spine, and wrist. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the physical therapists current knowledge about osteoporosis, its related risk factors, and clinical presentation in Saudi Arabia. Methodology: One hundred and sixty-eight physiotherapists participated in a cross-sectional study from February 2021 to July 2021 to assess their level of knowledge, attitude, and practice toward osteoporosis, and its risk factors among physical therapists working in Saudi Arabia. The participants completed the valid and reliable Osteoporosis Knowledge Assessment Tool questionnaire (OKAT). OKAT is composed of 20 items. One point was given to each correct answer while 0 for wrong and I don’t know responses. The total score determines the participant’s OP knowledge. The total score of 0-7 is classified as poor knowledge, and a total score of 8-13 is considered as having good knowledge. Finally, 14 points or higher were considered as having excellent knowledge. Results: The results showed that 67.9% (n=114) of participants had good knowledge about osteoporosis, 19.6% (n=33) had a poor knowledge, and only 12.5% (n=21) of the participating physiotherapists had excellent knowledge. Conclusion and recommendations: The study findings showed that physical therapists have an overall good knowledge about osteoporosis. However, their scores were low in questions related to the practice and prevention of osteoporosis making this a concerning indicator. The recommendations for physiotherapists are to be aware of OP risks and prevention of its complications strategies.
