Abstract
:
Background: Platelet concentrate is one of the blood products obtained during the blood bag process at the blood bank. The application of platelet concentrate includes treatment of thrombocytopenia, coagulation disorder and other health problems. The average storage of platelet concentrate is approximately five days at room temperature 22 °C. Aim: In King Abdulaziz University hospital, they keep the platelet concentrate for five days according to their policy, we are trying to monitor the outdated platelet concentrate bag after expiry by determining the changes in some parameters such as pH, glucose levels, and bacterial growth. This will help to examine the possibility of platelet storage extension. Study design and method: Platelet concentrate was separated from 30 random donors (8 Female & 22 Male) and kept on an agitator at room temperature (22°C). Parameters such as pH, protein and glucose were measured using Roche Combur 100 Test® Strips. Regarding bacterial detection, we used Haemonetics eBDS™ System. All measurements started on day five and (the control) and then repeated on days seven, nine and eleven. Result: There were no significant changes in all parameters on days five and seven. However, there was a significant change in glucose (p=<0.0001) and) on days 9 and 11. For pH, there was a significant change in pH at day nine (p=0.033) and at day 11 (p=0.0002) Conclusion: Our study reveals that platelet concentrate extension could be possible for up to seven days. However, further studies are needed to evaluate platelet function during expiry time to see if the platelets are morphologically and functionally stable.
