Abstract
:
Background: Preparedness for birth is an advance planning and preparation for delivery. Birth preparedness (BP) includes preparation for normal delivery, readiness to deal with complications, postnatal and newborn care. Inadequate knowledge and insufficient preparation for quick intervention in case of emergencies, lead to delay in receiving health services. This is an especially worrying concern for women of childbearing age, where there is a greater potential for poor maternal and fetal outcomes. Aim: This study aimed to assess the knowledge and attitude of the primigravida on birth preparedness. Methods: An exploratory, descriptive cross-sectional study conducted at King Fahad Specialist Hospital in Tabuk city, Saudi Arabia. Two hundred primigravida women constituted the study sample. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect the data. Results: About two thirds of the primigravida women (65.0%) had moderate level of knowledge about BP. With regards to attitude, 96.5% of them had favorable attitude on BP. For the practice of primigravida women, a good level of practice had been observed among 58.5%. Univariate analyses revealed that, level of knowledge has a significant strong association with the level of attitude while level of practice did not reach statistical significance but showed better association with the level of attitude. Conclusion and Recommendations: The knowledge of primigravida women regarding BP deemed moderate while practice found to be good and the attitude was highly favorable. Hence, the importance of antenatal care clinics is vital among pregnant women as it can provide education on BP. Governmental institutions and its affiliates that are assigned in a sector of maternal health should develop strategies to improve BP at individual and community level. Moreover, further in-depth researches are needed in different regions of Saudi Arabia to verify the results of this study and to investigate nurses and midwifes attitude towards birth preparedness. Therefore, this study provides evidence that might be used as a baseline for the obstetrics healthcare providers in order to promote maternal health in term of birth preparedness. Keywords: Birth preparedness, primigravida, knowledge, attitude, practice
