This study aims to apply magnetized water technology in cultivation of jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis L.) plants, to save irrigation water, get rid of soil salinity, which characterizes soils of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, reduce chemical nutrients, which has positive effects on environment and human health and at the same time, achieve high yield.
Glasshouse experiments were conducted using plastic pots (40 cm. height, 29 cm. in diameter). Seeds were germinated in a selected soil, after soil was analyzed chemically (macro and micronutrients) and physically (soil texture, water holding capacity, soil moisture, electrical conductivity, and pH), under the natural conditions of Jeddah City. Experiments were designed in completely randomized design using five treatments in addition to the control.
Different water regimes had been applied according to soil water holding capacity (SWHC). These include: 70%, 50% and 30% (SWHC) . the experiments were divided into two main water types: normal irrigation water and magnetized irrigation water. Water was magnetized using a small magnet which was designed especially for pots experiments. The magnet was connected to the water pipes, while the other part of the pipe was used for normal water, so that, water for all treatments came from the same source.
Different plant characteristics were measured, these include: Morphological measurements, specifically, plant height, root/shoot ratio, daily root growth rate, leaves number, leaves area and fresh and dry weight of shoot and root systems.
Biochemical measurements, namely, water content, relative water content, photosyn thetic pigments (chlorophyll A, chlorophyll B, carotenoids and the percentage of chlorophyll A to chlorophyll B), electrical conductivity (EC), pH, soluble proteins, soluble proline, amino acids, some essential elements for shoots and roots (calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, iron, phosphorous, cupper and manganese) and water use efficiency. The effect of irrigation with magnetized water has positive attributes on many growth indexes in Jojoba plants, such as plant height, root-shoot ratios, daily root growth rate, leaves number, leaves area and fresh and dry weights of shoot and root systems. All these parameters were significantly higher compared to their resemblance plants which irrigated with normal water in almost all harvest times even in deficit irrigation treatments (50% and 30% SWHC).
As a result of high protein content in magnetized water treatments, there was less proline accumulation in their shoots and roots compared to the normal water treatments, which accumulated high amount of proline as a result of less protein.
From this study we can conclude that, using magnetized water in irrigation can be considered as one of the most valuable modern technologies that can assist in saving irrigation water |
