Abstract
:
Nowadays children witness the golden age of information through the Internet and satellite channels. This contributes significantly to the children's knowledge of various sources that help them learn about scientific achievements, inventions, inventors, and topics related to science. This develops their critical thinking and creativity. It also improves their scholastic level. Electronic encyclopedias provide extensive information in all branches of knowledge. This study seeks to answer a main question: "To what extent has the Internet affected and made available the potential of electronic publishing to make Arabic children Encyclopedias available?" The empirical approach used to address the research problem was a field study with a checklist to achieve the following aims: survey Arabic free encyclopedias available through the Web for children, identify the general features of them, and monitor the similarities and differences between them and foreign children Encyclopedias available through the Web. The study has evaluated free four Arabic encyclopedias available through the Web compared with free four foreign children encyclopedias. One of the main findings of the study is that the institutions concerned with the child's education as well as the commercial publishers do not pay adequate attention to the Arabic electronic encyclopedias for children. In addition there is a time lag between the production of Arabic children encyclopedias and foreign encyclopedias on the web. Also the four Arabic encyclopedias do not benefit from the multimedia and web publishing possibilities.
