Abstract |

Studies from various parts of the world have indicated that chromium is an essesntial element required for normal carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. Studies on apparently healthy humans consuming normal diets have indicated signs of chromium deficiency reflected on elevated blood glucose, insulin, cholesterol, and triglycerides, and decreased high-density lipoproteins (HDL), and corrected by supplementation with chromium. More severe signs (including nerve and brain disorders) were reported for patients on total parenteral nutrition with no added chromium. Those signs were also corrected by addition of chromium. Supplementation studies on type 2 diabetic patients (NIDDM) gave conflicting results, with some reporting beneficial effects, and others reporting no significant improvement in glucose control or lipid profile. Many explanations were offered for this, including: variations in selected subjects themselves with respect to age, sex, and general health, as well as variations in their diets, and in the amount and type of supplement Cr used, and duration of the study. This paper outlines the possible mode of action of the element. It also reviews results of supplementation studies from various centers around the world, with emphasis, in particular, on results of supplementation studies conducted on Saudi subjects pointing to the existence of Cr deficiency in the kingdom. Finally, suggestions to correct the situation are discussed. |
