المستخلص : Osteoarthritis (OA) is a painful condition affecting over 40% of people aged over 65 years old. It has been established that it involves considerable local inflammation and, as such, is the classic example of inflammaging; a condition for which age-related inflammation is a contributing factor. Nutrigenomics is the study of the effects of foods and food constituents on gene expression and is becoming of great interest to both patients with OA as well as and clinicians and scientists interested in development of novel therapies for OA. One strong motivation behind this avenue of research is the fact that there are no proven effective treatments that can arrest or reverse OA. Inflammaging in relation to the OA joint is a complex topic involving cytokines and reactive oxygen species. This review discusses these together with the contribution of loss of muscle function to the progression of OA. This review the latest literature on nutraceuticals regarded as offering the best therapeutic potential. These include resveratrol from red wine grapes and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) from green tea. It is too early to provide definitive answers as to their effectiveness, but there is clearly sufficient data to warrant further investigation.
